Hundred & One Goals
June 17, 2009 2 Comments
After a week on the road I was reminded of a goal I had a long time ago but never made its way onto my list of 100 Goals. As much as I love to travel I’m quite surprised that it wasn’t one of the earliest goals on the list. What is this goal you may wonder? The 101st goal is to visit all 50 states.
After this trip I will have 13 states to go, including Alaska and Hawaii. The areas I have yet to visit are the southeast and northeast. I will likely be taking care of Florida in January and will try to take care of the rest by the end of next summer, with the exception of Alaska and Hawaii, which will require a bit more planning.
With this addition of a new goal, I realized that no list of goals is static. It is constantly evolving and changing. People change, desires change, ambitions change. I realized this recently when I climbed Angel’s Landing & was blessed with a real perspective of what the ground looks like from 1,200 feet above. It wasn’t enough for me to say I wouldn’t continue to pursue my goal of base jumping Devil’s Tower, but it was enough to make me question whether or not that goal is really who I am.
As I continue to accomplish the goals on my list I hope to add more goals to work towards. What would life be if I only had a list of 100 things to accomplish in my life? Worse still is what in the world would I do after those goals were completed? I suppose I could sit on my rocking chair on my porch & wait for my time to come, but that isn’t who I am. I’ll always be chasing a dream.

Love your blog! (new reader) I am 47, I had a goal “to be comleted by fifty” and well, I have accomplished that goal. But I never made any additional goals, and thus my interest in YOUR blog. I’m absolutely stagnant these days and can’t even move forward with making ANY goals. I’m hoping your blog and excellent writing will motivate me to start moving forward, I’m getting bored in the rocking chair.
What really helped me find direction was to compile my list of 100 Goals. Before I took the time to do this I THOUGHT I knew what I wanted out of life, but by taking the time to sit down and make a list I was able to find certain trends. I found that I was interested in travelling (which I already knew), educating myself (which I had already been doing), and “saving the Earth” which I knew was important, but never realized just how much. It was through the realization of just how much I valued our Earth that I decided to change my major in college from Business to Environmental Science. Instead of educating myself about money I was able to find what I truley valued & I know that I will be much happier chasing after a goal which is something I value deeply than chasing a degree only for the possibility of finding a high paying job.
Even if you don’t want to write down 100 goals, take the time to get in touch with who you are deep down. Not the you that you think you are, but the you that you have always wanted to be. Once you do that I have no doubt you will regain your passion and find direction again. Thanks for reading!
