Goal #146) Visit Every UNESCO Site: Chichen Itza

Visiting every UNESCO World Heritage Site is a pretty lofty goal. With 911 locations, knocking them all out will be difficult. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a person out there whose only goal in life is to visit each one…and that’d be an admiral goal.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites are located in 151 state parties on every continent except Antarctica. To see an interactive map of all the places included on the list, check out this site!

Today I was able to get one more site off my list: Chichen Itza on the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico. I arrived in Mexico on Friday night, and this morning we rented a car and set out on a three-hour drive halfway across the Yucatán. We arrived at Chichen Itza around noon, and spent the rest of the afternoon exploring the site. I was a little disappointed at first that I couldn’t climb to the top like I did at  Xunantunich in Belize. Then I appreciated it when I began taking photos and didn’t have stupid tourists in all of them. That made me smile on the inside.

The pyramid is huge. It’s the largest Mayan ruin I’ve been to, and so far, the most impressive.

I’ll be traveling south tomorrow and in the next couple of days will be visiting another UNESCO site, Sian Ka’an, which is a bio-reserve along the eastern coast of Mexico. Check out the photos of my trip to Mexico, and stay updated about my travels on the Hundred Goals Facebook Page!

Yeah, I hate that you can’t climb it any more. I love Coba/Nohuch Mul and you could still climb that one (it’s the tallest of all the Mayan pyramids) but you may not be able to any more. I’m glad you enjoyed your visit though; I’ve heard Chichen Itza is really touristy.

I wouldn’t say IT’S touristy…but there are plenty of people trying to sell tourists a bunch of crap. It’s a bit disappointing, and I’m planning on doing a compare/contrast post soon, so I’ll share more then! :)

That photo is fantastic! I haven’t been to Chichen Itza (yet!) but I have been to ruins while in Belize. I visited Cahal Pech which are pretty massive in size and you can climb on them. It was such a cool experience. I’m glad to hear you and Erin are having a great time :)
